Terminology: Marketing ROI vs. Investment ROI
For our purposes, we are calculating ROI based on the expense vs. the return, which is different than how you would refer to ROI for an investment of stocks, for instance. In investing, if you invested $100 and one month later it was valued at $110, you would say you had a 10% Return on your investment. In marketing, since the $100 is spent (expensed), if your cost to the client is $100, and the client made $110 on your marketing effort, you would say they had a 110% return, since they made back 100% of their money plus 10% more.
